The Messiah of Silence. The Soldier of Destruction. As Tomoe Hotaru, she is a sweet child with
a dark past. As Sailor Saturn, she is much colder and more focused, able to destroy entire planets
with her weapon. As Mistress 9, she is the servant of an almighty evil who has stolen the soul of
an innocent child. Perhaps it is the amount of mystery around this enigmatic character that gives Saturn
and her incarnations so many legends she can call her own.
DIES GAUDII
was used as the source for just about every rumor in this section. The articles dealing with Saturn are
long and detailed, so if my information here seems lacking, it's because Ian's site has much more
information that is simply too long to include here.
Takeuchi mixed up Saturn and Pluto's elements when she created them.
This is a common
misconception, dealing with the belief of the god Saturn being related to the Greek god Cronus,
who was mistakenly associated with time by later scholars and Pluto's status as god of the dead.
They are actually correct the way they are. Check the link above for the article I'm using
as a reference, because the full explanation is far too long to include here.
"Tomoe Hotaru" means "Firefly of Death."
"Oh, what a cute little firefly!" *shing* "AHHHHH!" Initially listed in the Odds n' Ends section as a joke, I've been finding more and more sites using this erroneous name meaning, so it's been moved to a more visible position. "Tomoe Hotaru" is more difficult to shove into a cute little phrase than the other characters names because it combines several phrases. Important to note is that the characters used to spell "Hotaru" for her name and the "Hotaru" reffering to a firefly are completely different. "To" is the same character used for "Earth," as in the ground, that is used in the name "Dosei," the Japanese name for the planet Saturn. "Moe" is a phrase meaning "to sprout" or "to germinate." This would refer to the birth of a firefly from the soil. No characters for "Death" appear in this name.
Saturn attacks with Death Ribbon Revolution.
Despite the nonsense Sweet Usagi Sailormoon puts forth to support the latter phrase, the actual name is approximated in katakana to be "Death Reborn Revolution" when it appears in the manga. The katakana between "reborn" and "ribbon" are close, however, as is the pronunciation. The name is actually a play on words because Death Reborn Revolution utilizes ribbons, "reborn" sounding like "ribbon," especially in
Japanese. Despite the fact Natsuki Lynn argues that it is a pun, that does not make "Ribbon" an acceptable phrase just because "reborn"
is a pun on "ribbon". After all, I can't call "Lead Crow" "Red Crow" just because her name contains a pun on "Red" (the color
of her outfit, hair, and skin) Incidentally, a few video games accidentally use "ribbon," but video games are hardly canonical.
In the manga, Sailor Saturn can destroy the entire world with "Death Reborn Revolution" and
then recreate everything.
First off, Death Reborn Revolution is never used to destroy the world.
While Saturn does use this attack in act 33, she uses it to drain Master Pharaoh 90's energy.
It is actually Saturn bringing her glaive down, without any incantation, that destroys the world.
She does not recreate the world, however-that is Sailor Moon's job, because she is the Messiah.
In the anime, Sailor Saturn uses "Silence Glaive Apply" to destroy the world.
First, the correct name is "Silence Glaive Surprise." Second, this attack still doesn't destroy
the world. This attack creates a burst of purple light, but doesn't actually damage anything.
Again, it is Saturn bringing down her glaive that causes destruction - when she uses Silence Glaive
Surprise in the anime, it was meant to create a distraction to give her time to bring the glaive
down. Watch, Nehellenia's palace doesn't explode until the Glaive touches the ground.
Sailor Saturn's mission in the anime is to destroy the world.
That's Mistress 9
that wishes to create the Silence, as she actually calls herself The Messiah of Silence.
Even in the manga, Saturn isn't trying to bring the Silence, she's trying to destroy the
Tau Galaxy. In the anime, Saturn is awakened by destroying Mistress 9, and her goal is
to destroy Master Pharaoh 90, though Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna had thought earlier in the
series that Sailor Saturn was actually the Messiah of Silence. They were mistaken. Also,
the term of "the Silence" is never used in the manga, only the anime.
Hotaru's dream is to be a doctor.
It is Ami's dream to be a doctor (which is stated
many times in the anime and manga.) Hotaru's dream is actually to be a nurse.
Hotaru is part cyborg in the manga. The problem here is that people think "cyborg" and "robot"
are the same phrase. Hotaru does indeed have metal parts in her body thanks to her father's experiments,
but this would make her "part robot." A cyborg has metal and organic elements - the robot has none.
