Character Relationships

Usagi and Mamoru share a kiss.
Mamoru and Usagi expressing total hatred for each other.

With a series that is so focused on romance, it's only natural that the majority of rumors concern who is in love with whom. While it's usually concerned with characters perceived to be a couple, sometimes it can also involve a bit of denial over very real relationships. This section also deals with relationships outside of romance, as many rumors add members to several characters family trees when there's no familial connection.

  • Uranus and Neptune are not a couple.
False, as far as the Japanese version is concerned. They are very clearly lesbians involved in a relationship with each other. Just because they never got a kissing scene does not disprove this, as there are various scenes with them holding hands, getting jealous of attention received by the other, and clear innuendos between the two that prove they are having sex with each other, a far cry from being only friends. In the English dub, they are cousins. For a scan of an article about Haruka and Michiru's relationship and its portrayl in the English dub that ran in an American newspaper, click here.

  • Minako and Rei are lovers.
Now, with Haruka and Michiru out of the way, they are the ONLY pair of lesbians on the show and manga. Any other rumors you hear about the rest of the Senshi being lesbians are false. I used Minako and Rei because this one often is sourced by a scene in the manga where they are talking about their devotion to the princess. Those who were only reading the text-only translations and not seeing the actual context of the dialogue mistook it as their expression of love for each other. This also stems from the fact that Takeuchi tends to draw pictures in the artbooks that show some of the female characters holding each other suggestively, such as this one of Rei and Minako, or this one of Usagi and Minako (courtesy of DIES GAUDII). They make for great pictures, but they don't really count as proof that the characters are lovers in the manga storyline.

  • Makoto is a lesbian/bisexual.
This springs from an episode of Sailormoon S where Makoto seems infatuated with Haruka after getting a scarf, and the other Senshi kept wondering whether or not Makoto was in love with Haruka and kept reminding her that she was a girl. However, Makoto reveals at the end of the episode that she wasn't in love with Haruka, but she did look up to her. Some people seem to have missed that.

  • Jadeite and Nephrite are lovers.
In the Japanese manga, none of the Shitenno are gay, though they are all loyal to each other, as opposed to being the cut-throat competitors shown in the anime. In the anime, Kunzite and Zoicite are lovers, but Jadeite and Nephrite are not. Jadeite never even mentions the other Shitenno - were he in love with Nephrite, we'd have at least heard of him before his first appearence. As for Nephrite, if he were in love with him, shouldn't he grieve about his death instead of insulting him? The only hints given at the Shitenno's romantic interests in the manga is an image showing the four Guardian Senshi embracing the four Shitenno, but that's for another rumor.

  • *NEW*The Shitenno are romantically tied to the Guardian Senshi. This rumor is one of the greyer areas of Sailormoon fandom. It's mainly based off of an image in the manga that also appeared in the first Artbook that showed the Shitenno embracing the Guardian Senshi. This image was based on a concept that Naoko Takeuchi wished to include in the manga, but dropped due to lack of time, though a flashback in the last act of Sailor V showed Venus' interest in Kunzite during the Silver Millenium, and Rei had one of Jadeite during the side story Casablanca Memories. Jadeite had a few lines in Act 3 suggesting he may have been attracted to Rei, but this was never followed up on. Several of the musicals also incorporate this romance, but the musicals are not canon and often make up their own plot devices or alter plot devices that appeared in the anime and manga. The anime completely ignored this arc.

  • Shinozaki is Makoto's boyfriend.
He only showed up once in the series during the first arc of R, Makoto repeatedly denied that he was her boyfriend, saying that he was "something more," and yet still people think she's ready to walk down the aisle with him. I give up!

  • Rei hates Usagi.
This tends to come from people who've only seen the dub, where Rei's character is much crueler than the original version. Yes, Rei and Usagi still squabble, but she never suggested overthrowing Usagi as leader and taking over the Senshi (Her objection was whether Usagi was responsible enough to use the Moon Stick.) Nor did she keep the Moon Stick because Usagi forgot it in Rei's room-Usagi had actually given it to Rei because she didn't trust in her own resolve to not give up the crystal. However, even in the dub, Rei never outright despises Usagi and she still seeks to protect her. In the anime, Rei is often portrayed as the closest friend to Usagi, despite their fights. In the manga, Rei is never as rough on Usagi, but also not as close. She is a more closed-off character in general in the manga, and far more serious.

  • Ami is dating Urawa.
Urawa Ryo appears in two episodes of the first series of Sailormoon, and it is obvious there was a connection between these two. The DD Girls even created an illusion of him for Sailor Mercury to try to distract her before they managed to kill her. However, after this series, Urawa never re-appears, not even during SuperS when many supporting cast members from the first series returned. In Urawa's first episode, he is shown leaving Tokyo, which seems to indicate that he is no longer able to see Ami regularly. He also never appears again after the first series, and the anime later created a special called "Ami-chan's First Love," based on a manga chapter of the same name, so it seems the anime forgot about him. Urawa nevers appears in the manga, so this may also indicate why the anime dropped him from the plotline.

  • Minako is in love with Motoki.
I don't know where it came from, but it shows up quite often in fanfiction and websites. Minako is rarely shown even speaking to Motoki during the Sailormoon anime and manga, let alone dating him or in love with him. The Sailor V manga had her crushing on him, but the Sailor V manga also had many characters that later crossed over into the Sailormoon manga, including Motoki, and the earlier chapters seemed to be the prototype for the Sailormoon manga, as Usagi has friends and encounters similar to Minako's. Besides, in the anime, Motoki is already spoken for - he is dating Reika, whenever she's in the country anyway.

  • *NEW*Makoto is in love with Motoki.
She pursued him for one episode in the first series, but despite vowing not to give up on him, she apparently already did because she continued to pursue other men. Again, Motoki was seeing Reika even as late as SuperS and still never broke up with her, so he's still spoken for.

  • Fiore is in love with Mamoru.
This one-shot character from the Sailormoon R movie has an obsession with Mamoru, that's certain. However, he never seems to express it in romantic terms. The reason Fiore is so obsessed with Mamoru is that he is the only person who was ever a friend to Fiore, and the only person he's ever had real contact with. His flashback in the film shows that Mamoru was his only friend. Therefore, it seems natural that he's going to be extremely obsessed with Mamoru as the memory of the rose gift builds in his mind as he travels alone in space. There's a lot to be said about Fiore's unhealthy obsession, but his childish mannerisms also indicate that he is incapable of actually falling "in love" with someone. He has no trouble giving up his own lifeforce so Mamoru can save Usagi's life at the end of the movie.

  • Mamoru is in love with Fiore.
There is no arguement dealing with this. Mamoru is in love with Usagi. The first time he met up with Fiore again, he didn't even recognize him. He never shows any signs of loving Fiore, or even liking him (at least while Fiore is a pawn of the Xenian Flower.) Any Fiore/Mamoru slash you've found is unofficial.

  • Pluto is in love with Endymion.
There is never any mention of Pluto's romantic interests in the anime, period, except that she lives alone and Chibi Usa is her only friend. In the manga, there are parts of Pluto's dialogue during the Black Moon arc that many fans have speculated indicates she has romantic interest in him. In particular, her last words before she dies in this arc where she remarks on the color of his suit. However, in the same scene, she apologized for not being able to take care of Princess Serenity - she was more upset over Serenity then Endymion. After this, there is no more suggestion of her romantic interests. The idea of an Endymion and Pluto relationship is never pursued in the manga outright, so it must remain in the realm of speculation. It is worth noting that she never seems interested in Mamoru while she is in the past - any feelings that she may have had would be directed towards King Endymion of the future. Also, there is a song that's appeared in three of the musicals, Eien Densetsu, Shin Densetsu Kourin, and Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin, where Pluto and Beryl sing of their love for Endymion. However, the musicals are hardly canon and Pluto still never pursues Endymion in the musicals. (Thanks to Babelfish, Kotetsu, and Jeni for setting me straight on this one!)

  • Rei is in love with Mamoru.
Rei never had significant romantic feelings for Mamoru. While she does briefly date him in the anime, it is never more than a crush, and Mamoru seems to go along with it so as not to hurt her feelings. Later, when Usagi and Rei are trapped at the ski resort, Rei says that she gave up on Mamoru and tells Usagi that she needs to get together with him or she'll punish her. When Mars dies in the end of that series, she tells Sailor Moon that she should have kissed Yuiichirou before she left for D Point, which means that Rei's romantic interests have clearly passed beyond Mamoru. In the manga, the Rei-Mamoru subplot never existed.

  • *NEW* Mamoru is in love with Rei. As mentioned above, Mamoru expressed no real interest in Rei. He posed as her boyfriend, but he remained incredibly detached. It was incredibly obvious, in the meantime, that he was more and more attracted to Usagi. After they finally hook up, he never pursues Rei or even references it. Again, the Rei-Mamoru subplot never existed in the manga.

  • Chibi Usa is in love with Mamoru.
Many anti-Chibi Usa fans point to what they deem an "Electra Complex" for Mamoru in the original anime and manga. This is actually a gross misinterpretation of the Japanese version. Chibi Usa, when she first appears, is only 6 years old (physically and mentally in the anime, mentally in the manga). She has lost her parents tragically and still blames herself, and here she meets a man who cares about her welfare. Naturally, she latches onto him. Some of her fawning is obviously meant to bother Usagi as well. Even when she learns that Mamoru is her father, the feelings don't seem to change, and some viewers interpret this to mean that she is in love with her own father. But watching her actions in the series, especially during SuperS and the manga's Dream arc, it's clear that she's got her romance set elsewhere (i.e. telling Mamoru that she'll introduce him to her first boyfriend).

  • Mamoru is in love with Chibi Usa.
I can't believe I'm adding this, because it should be obvious, but it seems "obvious" often means "smacking said individuals with blunt object until information sinks in." Mamoru never makes so much as a pass at his daughter, let alone romances her. He's her FATHER. He treats her as his DAUGHTER. It seems that many people who hate Chibi Usa and/or Mamoru believe that there is something wrong with Mamoru for not despising her as much as they do and vent it by saying Mamoru is in love with her. Many of them also point to a line early in the SuperS movie where Usagi asks Mamoru who he loves more and he doesn't answer. What many people fail to realize is how ridiculous this question is - Usagi is asking Mamoru to make a romantic comparison between herself and their own daughter. There is no such comparison - Usagi is his lover, Chibi Usa is his daughter. Even if Mamoru chose Usagi, this would mean he looks at Chibi Usa as a romantic interest, so he STILL loses. Besides, this silly train of thought ignores the fact that nobody else on the show despises Chibi Usa besides the villains. Does this mean that everyone in the cast has the hots for her too? I doubt these people think so, and neither do I. Let's leave it at that.

  • Usagi is in love with Seiya.
This really should have been up sooner. There's no doubt that Seiya fell for Usagi in some way (though the Stars anime gives the impression she was really placing her feelings for Kakyuu onto Usagi.) However, far too many people keep missing the subplot that Usagi never even notices Seiya loves her and does not return his affections. There are many instances during the anime and manga where Seiya's feelings are described as "unrequited," including by Seiya herself. Unrequited, as in, Seiya's feelings are not returned by Usagi. The fact that people have to throw in so many "what-ifs" and outright falsities to make this relationship work only further solidifies where Usagi and Seiya stand.

  • Mamoru hates Usagi/Usagi does not love Mamoru.
There's a reason I used the above image. There are numerous, numerous examples that Mamoru and Usagi deeply care for each other, in the anime and the manga, many of which I took out because this is already a long entry. This generally stems from Mamoru and Usagi's break-up in the second arc of Sailormoon R. He broke up with her due to nightmares that being with Usagi would cause her to die. However, Mamoru is actually shown mourning the break-up several times during this season, and once Usagi finds out what really caused the break-up, she convinces him that it's worth the risk. The source of the nightmares turns out to be Mamoru's future self, King Endymion, who wanted them to know that the future battle would not be won if their love wasn't strong enough. Seeing how they won and saved the future, I'd say these two are pretty tight. Many fans also frequently reference the English dub for their feelings as though it were the original anime and say that only the anime Mamoru hates Usagi. The original anime is much clearer - he is always seen with a slight smile when he meets Usagi in the first series to tease her, and is clearly not meaning her to take him seriously. He gets visibly upset in Episode 11 when Usagi starts insulting him and says he was only kidding, and Episode 13 has him apologizing when he realizes he has actually hurt Usagi's feelings instead of making her yell at him. Usagi and Mamoru.com offers a great series of articles in support of Usagi and Mamoru's romance, though it too references the dub as though it were the anime.

  • Mamoru and Seiya hate each other.
This one is much shorter - they never met in the manga, as Mamoru was dead when Seiya first appeared and when Mamoru came back, Seiya had already been killed/returned to her point of origin. In the anime, Seiya starts off hating Mamoru because she knows Usagi keeps writing him letters and never gets a response. Seiya starts to hate him because she thinks that Mamoru has completely abandoned Usagi. However, when she learns the truth, she immediately changes her opinion. When the Starlights and Kakyuu prepare to leave, a smiling Star Fighter asks Mamoru to take care of Usagi. We only see Mamoru and Seiya together in this same scene, and when Star Fighter makes this comment to him, Mamoru also smiles, so it seems he was glad Usagi had someone close to her when Mamoru himself could not help her. In any case, by the time these two meet, there's no malice between them because Seiya knows Mamoru could not stop himself from dying and Mamoru has never met Seiya until this moment. The idea that there is some sort of hatred seems to arise from fans who feel these two should obviously hate each other since they are "competing" for the interests of Usagi.

  • Chibi Chibi is related to Usagi.
In the anime, Chibi Chibi is Galaxia's Star Seed. In the manga, she is Sailor Cosmos, and that's where it gets confusing. The manga seems to imply that she is a form of Sailor Moon who fled the Sailor Wars and disguised herself as Chibi Chibi, but meeting Sailor Moon helped her regain her courage. The manga was unfortunately very vague, but it IS clear that Cosmos is a future Sailor Moon. DIES GAUDII has a great article dealing with this topic.

  • Nehellenia is Queen Serenity's sister.
This one stems from a line in the manga where Chaos describes Metallia, Death Phantom, Pharaoh 90, and Nehellenia as Sailormoon's siblings, but this is because they came from the Galaxy Cauldron, where ALL stars are born, including the Sailor Senshi and everyone else (in this case, their star seeds). This does not make them biological relatives, however. Nehellenia says that she and Serenity came from the same place, far across the galaxy, but she too is referring to the cauldron (hence foreshadowing.) Nehellenia also said that she came from the dark side of the moon, but the other senshi and even Queen Serenity said she was lying, thus making Nehellenia's ties to the White Moon kingdom even murkier.
