Pretty Guardian Sailormoon

Sailormoon stares in awe at the mulleted Tuxedo Kamen.
"My, what a big mullet you have!"

Since the premier of the new live-action version of Saillormoon, known as "Pretty Guardian Sailormoon," it's only natural for rumors to arise from the usual sources - fansubs, odd websites, word of mouth. This page is tracking the most popular of the rumors as the series continues it's run in Japan. After all, if Luna is now a plush toy that turns into a Sailor Senshi, Queen Beryl is a dominatrix, and Tuxedo Kamen sports a mullet, who'd notice the false tidbits mixed in with the often strange changes present in the actual program?

A short note - several of the rumors in this section stem from the "partial parody sub" of the series put out by 380 Fansubs. For those unfamiliar with this particular sub, almost all of the lines in this sub are translated straight from Japanese - except every now and then a bizarre joke will fly in. There has been controversy over the quality of this sub, but that is not the issue - this page is just going to list their joke lines since at some points it can be hard to tell what's being said. For obvious reasons, the parody commercials will not be included.

  • Pretty Guardian Sailormoon will only be 12 episodes long.
This comes from TVTome, which lists episode guides and other facts on various television shows, American or otherwise. As the show has already crossed the 12 episode mark, this rumor is now quite false. Most likely, at the time the rumor appeared, those were the only titles known and thus the TV Tome was updated with the information availible, and someone assumed those would be the only episodes made.

  • The youma in PGSM are now called "tentacle monsters."
The most persistent of 380's gags. It doesn't help that several of the youma actually do use tentacles. They're still called "youma" in this series.

  • The theme song includes the phrase "Pretty tentacle rape targets they are moonlight heart."
Those naughty tentacles. The line is actually "Sailor Senshi, that is a moonlight miracle." This only appeared in 380's Act 1 release.

  • Sailor Moon introduces herself as the "pretty underaged soldier".
Odd joke...she is still the "pretty sailor-suited soldier." Also only appeared in Act 1.

  • In Episode 2, Ami wants to yuri up Usagi.
For some reason, 380 is fixated on jokes about pedophilia (which they've toned down) and random sex (which they've not). For the uninitiated, "yuri" is the term for graphic girl/girl sex, usually used in reference to stories containing that topic. The original line was Ami saying that she wanted to fight with Usagi.

  • The series is actually called Pretty Guardian S&M.
380's original release files usually abbreviate this as yet another odd joke. No, there's no sado-mashochism in this series (sorry fanboys!).

  • Mercury's attack is "Mercury Aqua Beam."
This has appeared in both the 380 parody release and the TV-Nihon "straight" release. The actual attack is "Mercury Aqua Mist," and was corrected in later fansub releases. In an interesting footnote, the re-release of the manga has given a name to Mercury's mist attack (named "Sabao Spray" in the anime), and it ALSO uses "Mercury Aqua Mist."

  • The second of the Shitenno to appear is Nephelite.
As only TV-Nihon has subbed this far, they get to have the blame for this one. This fellow is STILL called "Nephrite," despite the fact he really looks nothing like his anime and manga counterparts. This name was corrected starting with Act 7.

  • Mamoru's actor is gay.
Finally, a non-fansub rumor! For some odd reason, rumors have spread that Mamoru's actor is gay. There's been no discussion of his orientation from the Japanese sources, so it's rather pointless to even debate it. I'm amazed people think MAMORU's actor is gay, considering the obvious effeminate stereotypes displayed by Minako's Liberace-like manager...apparently mullets trip off gaydars better than frills and nail polish?
